The Family Business

It's "twisted perception" confession time:
Sometimes I watch The Godfather and I wish my family was more like that.

All that pasta...all those cannolis...and the most amazing wedding parties this side of Greece (the Greeks' wedding parties are pretty rockin' too)...

Well, it's a beautiful thing.

Now of course I don't want my sibs to go whack people that cheat me out of money or put horse heads in the beds of people who don't give me what I want (if you haven't seen the movie, it's cooler than it sounds). But that kind of allegience, that kind of acceptance and dependability...

Well, it's a beautiful thing.

However, with the shattering of my childhood family I've learned something even more profound:

"Family" is not the people you share blood with - it's the people you share your life with.

I am so grateful for all the family I have in my life (both gene-sharing and non) who join me in celebrating the good and carry me through the bad. And to all of you out there who's heart aches everytime you hear about someone else's 4-generation family reunion or have no one to choke down dry turkey with on Thanksgiving, know that you have the power to create your own "family" full of those who have been the kindest and truest to you.

Feel free to include me! I love you like a sis!
(And I make really good italian food)

We love you too Lauren! What are your Thanksgiving plans anyway? Hey, I've tried to call you a couple of times but your number has changed and I don't have the new one (and I accidentally deleted your cell). Oops! Call me!

the next time i see you i will make you cannoli and take revenge upon anyone who has ever done you wrong.

love YOU like a sis. hang in there, you will always be my family, no matter how screwed up everyone else is.

***and don't overdo your T-day plans. it could be the death of you. auto immune disorders can get ugly.

Have you read the book? I am not sure what compelled me to pick it up...but it was just mesmerizing. An amazing story. I had actually seen the movie and not liked it one bit. I had no idea what was going on...but the book...amazing.

And you are so right - that the families that we create are sometimes the ones that are the most precious...
